Virtual Engineered Composites or VEC is a patented fibreglas-moulding process owned by Genmar Holdings, parent company of Glastron.

The VEC process replaces traditional open-moulding processes with a computer-controlled closed-mould system, which produces complex fibreglas parts of defined thickness and strength.

Layers of fibreglas mat are laid in the mould and a special resin is injected into the mould under immense pressures. The technology allows a hull to be turned out of the mould in as little as half an hour.

Glastron's VEC construction makes the hulls stronger, less prone to vibration and quieter on the water than traditional open-mould hulls.

The precision in terms of thickness and fairness of finish enhances the consistency of things like hull running surfaces and weight for smoother performance, and add-on parts like windscreens, seats, cleats and rails can be installed with tighter tolerances and better fit.

After the hull shell is complete, the boat rolls along a robotic production line where CAD computer router machines cut and drill to specifications to 1/1000th of an inch - which means the interior installations (dash, wiring looms, screens, seats and so on) are perfectly aligned.

This technology allows companies like Glastron greater economies of scale, decreased labour costs and quicker delivery times - which add up to a better price without sacrificing build quality. The limited lifetime warranty on VEC hulls, decks and transom is also a major selling point on VEC-made hulls.
