Support My Journey

The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) believes that a cure will be found for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. To realize this goal, the CCFC is committed, first and foremost, to raise increasing funds for medical research.

This year, CCFC research has confirmed what we have suspected for years - that the highest rates of inflammatory bowel disease in the world are here in Canada, and they are increasing. Our Mission - to find the cure - is more urgent than ever.

In June 2006, Hannah joined thousands of Canadians who cycled, strolled, ran and rolled their way around almost 80 locations across Canada. Local efforts, large and small, link together to make up our national success! Together, we will FIND THE CURE!

Two years ago Hannah and her brother Thomas walked/rode the event with their aunt and uncle. Hannah rode in the bike trailer while Thomas insisted on walking - the whole way. Thomas kept saying that he was tired and that his feet were hurting but he adamantly refused to stop walking. They were about 10 or 15 minutes from finishing (long after everyone else) when his uncle finally asked him why he wouldn't get in the stroller. Thomas replied "I want to walk to help Hannah's tummy not hurt anymore." He was 4 1/2 years old. Needless to say, he rode his bike the next year to help his sister!!

A Letter From Hannah's Mom Nicole (before this year's event)

Dear Friends,

Our annual Heel'n'Wheel-a-thon is right around the corner and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support at last year's event.  Together we raised an incredible $11,000 in 2005!  Whether you donated your time or collected pledges, we couldn't have done it without you.  Every dollar you helped raise increases our chances of finding a much needed cure for IBD.  Every moment you spend giving your time helps us increase awareness of IBD.  Congratulations and Thank-You!

Many of you are familiar with the story of my beautiful daughter Hannah, who, for the third year, is proud to be the Honorary Chair for the Durham East Chapter's Heel'n'Wheel-a-thon.  Hannah began having symptoms when she was 14 months old and was eventually diagnosed with Crohn's disease at 23 months.  She is now 4 and a half years old and we are happy to share Hannah's story in order to heighten awareness of pediatric IBD.

Hannah started Junior Kindergarten this past September and is an excellent student.  Although she does experience some concentration and memory difficulty, she is doing very well.  She is also very excited to be starting soccer the end of May.  And while we are happy for Hannah to be living the life of any four year old and to be trying new things, each new activity comes with issues...most people don't have a full understanding of IBD or of what it means for those who live with it.

Soccer will be particularly challenging, as most of the fields we play at do NOT have washroom facilities readily available.  No problem!  I just take my trusty potty and a container of wipes in my van EVERYWHERE WE GO!!!!

Hannah has a little sister who has also begun showing symptoms of Crohn's Disease.  Although she does not have a confirmed diagnosis, she does respond well to the same alternative therapies as Hannah.  This is significant because it shows that IBD really can affect anyone at anytime.  We have no family history of IBD and yet we have one child diagnosed and another with undisputable symptoms.  Please help us FIND THE CURE.

It can be a daily struggle to keep Hannah and Kathryn well.  We face many challenges not the least of which is ensuring they are growing as they should.  Hannah is still very petite at only 32 pounds and I often get asked if the girls are twins (Katy is only 1 and a half).  Much of the time things are pretty good but other times can be painful and heartbreaking.  Hannah has such a wonderful and strong spirit in her.  Even at such a young age, she refuses to give in to pain, fatigue or any other symptoms she may experience.  My little girl is such an inspiration to me...

Our family is looking forward to helping to find the cure for these diseases by raising funds for this year's Heel'n'Wheel-a-Thon!  I challenge you to join us on Sunday, June 11th at Rotary Sunrise Lake Park in Whitby.  I'm sending one pledge form for you and one for a friend, so that you can raise pledges and participate together to find the cure!  Go at your own pace - walk, run, push a stroller or even walk your dog.  If all of your friends, family and co-workers participate locally, we will reach our target and contribute greatly to medical research.

Our Mission: Find the Cure / Notre mission: Trouver un traitement curatif

Remember that if you don't walk and I don't walk, who will?  If you are unable to participate on the day of June 11th, you can also make a donation to Hannah's pledge form!  Every person can make a difference!
