How do you compare hours on a boat engine to miles on a car?

Boat engines work much harder than the average car engine. They are under a constant load; usually running at about 70- 90% of total power. An 18-19 foot boat, going 35 MPH, roughly equals a car doing in excess of 100mph. Simply put, water is harder to drive through than air. So how do you compare the wear and tear? Even experts have a wide margin of judgement. Every 100hrs. on a boat could equal anywhere from 5,000-15,000 miles on a car, depending on how hard it was driven. Rule of thumb: 100 hours. = 10,000 miles or 16,000 km. Bottom line: Buy from a trusted source (reputable dealer) or have the boat inspected if you have doubts. Footnote: Most engines are wrecked from leaking gaskets and exhaust risers. That is the biggest cause of "engine wear", which is actually damage. Maintaining your engine is the best way to protect your investment.
