Who's Riding the Range? Doctor Gunn Laura Jo
Who's Riding the Range? PLAY MP3 demo
Where are the guys in the white hats when you need them?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who's ridin' the range? (2x)
Where are those Texas Rangers and Kimosabi strangers?
Who's ridin' the range?
It's just those wackos in Waco in a pick up painted at Mako
A football team from Dallas and an old mule named Alice
That's who's....ridin' the range.
Who's ridin' the range? (2x)
Every time I open a paper, I read about some mother raper
Who's ridin' the range?
With a gun stuck in the dash board and the radio blaring "Amen Lord"
They've got a road beer for the drive home in a Nissan from the Sky Dome
That's who's....ridin' the range.
Who's ridin' the range? (2x)
All the cowboys are urban and some might wear a turban
Who's ridin' the range?
In L.A. its King Rodney, car jackers hit Miami
It sure ain't William Kunsler...maybe its Herman Munster
That's who's....ridin' the range.
Radio Interview 1 Radio Interview 2
Mention abortion and your likely to stir a pot that has been boiling for years, and makes politicians cringe. In the early '90's, protests on both sides sprang up everywhere. Dr. Gunn was shot and killed in Pensacola, Florida. Legal abortion providers everywhere were literally "under the gun".
The confrontational images from the Melbourne Clinic were on the 6 o'clock news every night. Not 30 miles from my apartment in Cape Canaveral, religious zealots were blocking the entrance and harassing patients. It made me MAD! They picketed Doctors and nurses private homes. They sent threatening letters. They used their children as pawns and put them in harms way.
Worst of all, they attracted a "lunatic fringe" that was bent on murder. I wrote this song in protest and a local radio station played it while they interviewed me. I felt like it was the 60's again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
You were shot in the back! Another lunatic screams.
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
May you rest with the heros of American dreams.
Chorus
Cold blooded murder can't be allowed in the name of the
Lord.
When will we learn that the pen is mightier than the sword
That killed Doctor Gunn.
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
We won't take any more, the battle lines are drawn.
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
We will carry on for you, now that you're gone.
Chorus
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
Why do some people think that they're above the law?
Doctor Gunn, Doctor Gunn
We'll never let you down, you were the final straw.
Chorus

Intro
Laura Jo was 15 years old and had Ewing's sarcoma.
From her hospital bed in Akron, Ohio she wrote these words.
"I feel that I may cease to live not very much longer from now.
But before I die, I would like to feel success, to taste fame,
to touch a part of the world, to leave my mark and never be forgotten."

Getting ready to go to senior high in Ohio.
Everything to live for, feeling strong, learning to grow.
When out of the black a cloud of darkness rose above.
Blocking the sun from shining down on a helpless dove.
She wants to be young and have some fun while she can.
Become a famous actress, write a book, have a plan.
But now she feels to old to ever be young again.
Fighting despair with the heart of a lion.
Chorus
Laura Jo has a world in her head
and dreams of a better place to be.
Laura Jo sees images of a nicer kind of reality.
Where eagles fly -- in a clear blue sky
Where no one dies -- and nobody cries.
Where is the promise of a young girl's happiness?
Blowing in the wind, like a seed earth didn't caress
But in another perfect world a tree grows proud and strong.
Where all the clouds are silver lined and nothing can go wrong.
Chorus
Laura Jo -o-o-o
End
Laura Jo had her taste of fame before she died
thanks to columnist Erma Bombeck, who has also left us.
Her story and words were featured in a heart-wrenching story
that led me to write this song in dedication.
I still can't sing it without a tear in my eye.
Her parents have a copy of the recording.
